Salem and Oregon Country Heritage Tour

Jason LeeWhen the first white settlers decided to stay in Oregon they chose to live in the Champoeg/French Praire area, the first major clearing as they came up the Willamette River.  We'll begin with a visit to the Champoeg town site and State Heritage Area.  We'll see where the famous American trapper, Joe Meek, called out for "a divide," a vote for the first government in the Northwest.  We'll hear stories of two great Oregon men -- John McLaughlin (The Father of Oregon) and Missionary Jason Lee and their close connection to Canada.  We'll see the John McLaughlin House in Oregon City,  Willamette Falls, and the Colony of Aurora.  We'll see Jason Lee's 1841 home in Salem, the old water-powered woolen mill and tour the Oregon State Capital building.  From the tower of the Capitol you can see the campus of the oldest university in the western United States, Willamette University.
